A Brief History of Salt: A Hero or a Rogue?

A Brief History of Salt: A Hero or a Rogue?

Salt has been the king of the spice world for thousands of years, but how did it get there? Let's sprinkle a little history and flavour into the mix!

Back in ancient times, salt was not just a seasoning, it was a symbol of wealth and power. Roman soldiers were even paid in salt, which is where we get the word "salary"! But salt wasn't just for the rich and famous. It was also used as a form of currency and even as a means of preserving food before refrigeration was a thing.

But salt wasn't just a commodity for the rich and powerful. It was also an essential part of daily life for ordinary people. It was used as a preservative to keep food from spoiling, and as a means of enhancing flavour and making bland foods more palatable.

As time went on, salt became more widely available and affordable, and people began to experiment with different types of salt from around the world. From the pink Himalayan salt mined in Pakistan to the flaky Fleur de Sel harvested in France, there's a salt for every taste and occasion.  But it hasn't all been smooth sailing for salt. The salt tax was a source of conflict and even sparked a rebellion in India in the 1930s.

In modern times, salt has been blamed for a host of health problems, including high blood pressure and heart disease. However, recent research suggests that the relationship between salt and health may be more complicated than we once thought and that some people may actually benefit from a higher salt intake.

Despite its checkered past and uncertain future, salt remains a beloved and essential part of our lives, a seasoning superstar that adds flavour and depth to everything from potato chips to gourmet meals.

So, let's raise a salty rimmed margarita to the wonders of salt and its rich history. Whether you're a fan of plain old table salt or the fanciest fleur de sel, there's no denying that salt is a true seasoning superstar.
